I was waiting for an arranged viewing of a flat owned by my wife and I – a rather large flat but unreconstructed. To my surprise, I see a black Porsche Cayenne park in front of our apartment block and three big athletic guys get out.
My first thoughts are definitely along the lines that these guys are either: 1) Mafia; or 2) execs from a big construction company and they are looking at the flat for accommodation for their employees.
After I show the flat to them, they say they are very interested and could they rent it.
In my books, even a national hockey hero needs a reference check.
At this point there are some communication problems when I explain to them that we need to get references. I ask a colleague (our office is in the same building) to translate for me.
She explained the situation to them, and when we went back to our office to get the papers for them to fill in, she breathlessly told me that these were all famous hockey players for Brno’s Kometa hockey team and that one was a national hockey hero – Jiří Dopita. He had played in the NHL and was part of the 1998 Czech national team that won gold in the Winter Olympics.
After collecting the references, I asked our property manager to check them for all three renters.
Phone the Brno Kometa coach?’ he questioned.
Yes, absolutely’, I replied.
In my books, even a national hero is required to have reference checks.
Lesson learned: This was learned many years in the past but I try to apply it consistently. Always check references on potential tenants, even if they are a national hockey hero!
