IBA celebrates its 20th Anniversary in Prague

Ian Bryan Architects (‘IBA’), one of the Czech Republic’s leading international architectural practices is delighted to announce that 2018 marks its 20th anniversary. The firm is headed up by the architects Ian Bryan and Eduard Trembulak, and opened its doors for business in December 1997.

Bryan, a British architect who first arrived in Prague in 1994, has seen many changes in the real estate business, from enormous growth in the early years, through the worldwide financial crisis from 2007 onwards, to what is now a booming industry once again.

Talking about this, Bryan, who is the Managing Director of IBA said: ‘When we started, I doubt that any of us could have foreseen quite what a rollercoaster the real estate world would have lived through over the next 20 years, and we have certainly had our challenges!  As the client environment has improved, it has finally begun to sink in that design quality counts and that it more than pays back in terms of the bottom line.  The real estate environment has now become much more sophisticated and this is mirrored in the changes that can be seen in the whole of Czech society.

What has also been interesting for us has been the way in which the types of projects have changed; early on, the focus was purely on commercial development and then hotels; the last few years has been all about residential and office interiors.’

IBA’s work in the pre-financial crisis period included landmark projects such as the Statenicky Mlyn residential development and the 5 star Kempinski (now The Mark) Hotel. These two very different projects demonstrate the wide breadth of the firm’s abilities; the first, a large-scale rejuvenation project and the second an intricate conversion of a protected historic building.

More recently, IBA’s designs have become even better known due to its work on the Crestyl developed ‘Docks’ that have won numerous real estate awards including ‘Best Residential Development’ awards in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

With a view to the firm’s ongoing development, however, Bryan said: ‘We have always undertaken projects from many different sectors, but recently we have been able to specialise much more in the areas in which we are particularly strong, which are also seeing the biggest growth.   Hotels still remain a key part of our business, in particular due to our ongoing work with the Hilton Hotels, with whom we have a track record going back 18 years.  But we are also very committed to our ‘work space’ projects which tend to be fast track, and where we can see the fruits of our labours in just a short time period.  It’s in this area that the benefits of better design are particularly being felt in terms of increased productivity, employees’ well-being and in attracting and keeping the best talent.  We are especially proud of our innovative designs for companies such as SCS software and Oracle.

There can’t be many cities in the world that have gone through the transformation that we have seen in Prague and the Czech Republic generally over the last 20 years.  It has been a privilege to have been part of this and we are looking forward to the next 20 years and are hopeful that we can continue to make our contribution to the improvement of the architectural environment.’, Prague 21.02.2018
