Nationalization of media in the Czech republic has been completed

German journalist Hans-Peter Siebenhaar took recently a look at the Czech media market for German business news and says, that Eastern Europe follows the Russian model of nationalization of its media power.

The new, national-conservative government in Poland threatens foreign media companies, including Axel Springer, to push out of the country. The times when Eastern Europe was an exciting space for media investments, comes to an end. Foreign investors - the USA, Great Britain, Switzerland or even Germany - are not popular anymore in the East.

In some countries, the nationalization has even been completed. Czech Republic is an internationally acclaimed example. Foreign publishers play a less crusial role now. Domestic companies and oligarchs control all the important media in the country. For example, Andrej Babis, the finance minister and deputy prime minister of the EU member state owns and controls well-known newspapers, radio stations and internet portals. This is something that not even Vladimir Putin and his supporters in the Kremlin have attempted.
