When the facts change, I change my mind

Things to Think About

By Pepper de Callier

When the facts change, I change my mind. John Maynard Keynes

Could this be an insight into the difference between being committed, but open-minded and being bull-headed?  I think so.  We often hear about someone who just wouldn’t give up on something—an idea, a new business venture, whatever—and many times this is meant as a compliment.  In fact, I think this is viewed as such a virtue, that people are afraid to give up on something, because people will think them a quitter, or the type of person who can’t make up her, or his, mind.  Today, even more than in Keynes’s time in the first half of the 20th century, things are changing so fast—the largest taxi company doesn’t own one taxi, the largest retailer owns no inventory—that being flexible, and having the courage to change.  This is the 21st century version of commitment—a commitment to fact-based, critical thinking.  Is it time to re-visit something in your world?

Till next time…
