Things to Think About - A key, self-initiated way to listen well is to ask a sincere question

Things to Think About
By Pepper de Callier

“A key, self-initiated way to listen well is to ask a sincere question.”  Allan Cox

One of the most common criticisms of leaders that I hear is “They just don’t listen”.  When I share this with the leader to whom the criticism is directed, their response usually begins with downcast eyes and a nod indicating that they realize the truth in what was said.  However, for many, the most difficult part is overcoming the initial reaction, which is, “I have been like this for years.  Is it really possible to change?”  This initial reaction creates an overwhelming sense of dread—that overcoming the problem is going to be very difficult.

That’s where this wonderful quote comes in.  Think about it for a moment.  There is no process to apply, no list of things to remember, no mantra to remind you to listen.  It all begins with something as simple as asking a sincere question.

Try it today with someone and see how easy it is to become a “listener”.

Good luck on your journey!

Today’s quote is provided by Allan Cox. Allan is a close friend of mine who has written 8 business books and 3 books of poetry. His contributions across more than 40 large corporations, most with global reach, builds upon and extends the pioneering work of Vienna Psychiatrist Alfred Adler. Dr. Jay Colker, Director, Center for Adlerian Practice and Scholarship at Adler University, Chicago, IL says “In a serious and general way, Cox is the first person in the U.S. to adapt two of Adler’s central concepts, (1) Early Recollections and (2) Style-of-Life, to nurture both executive development and corporate performance.”
