Things to Think About - Mrs. Clinton has lost control of events as a result of an obsessive need to manipulate them

Things to Think About
By Pepper de Callier

“Mrs. Clinton has lost control of events as a result of an obsessive need to manipulate them.”  Peter Wehner, Op-ed piece in The International New York Times titled “The Politics of Self Destruction”

Normally I shy away from political references in this column, but this one is different in that it speaks so eloquently to a major issue in the transition from management to leadership.  So, setting political references aside, how does this apply to leadership transition in the business world?   When one is promoted to positions of greater responsibility and authority, the demands and expectations placed on that individual also expand.  This is what transition is all about as managers move into leadership positions.  However, what is so often missed as they begin to navigate the transition, is that one’s approach must adapt, too.  Here is what I say to the people with whom I work, who are in transition: Micro-managing is not scalable.  Period.   Understanding this concept and applying it can, as we see time and again, make all the difference in the outcome.

Good luck on your journey!
