Better together than alone

Are you an entrepreneur or a small company? Do you need an attractive place for your work and client meetings? Do you need to find new inspiration, motivation and drive in your projects? Are you working on your own or looking for help from other professionals? Coworking is the answer to all of these questions!

Coworking is a fairly new phenomenon and is being covered more and more by the media. It’s a new style of working built on a community sharing the same office, the synergy of different professions, and mutual respect and trust. The coworking movement started in San Francisco in 2005, spread throughout the world and arrived in the Czech Republic a couple of years later.

Desk Room is one of the newest coworking centers in Prague, and opened in the city’s Malá Strana district in October 2011. Petr Načeradský, the owner of Desk Room, describes how it started. “After almost 11 years of a hectic but fairly comfortable corporate life, I decided to leave and start my own business. I was looking for an office for myself and came across the coworking concept. I really liked the idea. I’m an extrovert and like to meet interesting people, make friends and bounce my ideas off others. The main motivating factor was that coworking seemed to be an ideal way of achieving these goals that while allowing me to work as a sole entrepreneur.”

Načeradský explains that he was also looking for a different type of place to work. “During my career I have worked in different environments, from a dusty office in the middle of a plant workshop, through cozy offices in residential areas to open spaces in modern glass buildings. However, I wondered if this was this how I wanted to spend my working life? I think many other people have the same view.”

Načeradský was fortunate to find a location in the very heart of historic Prague. “I always liked going to Malá strana, the sense of history there, seeing people enjoying their time and everything this beautiful part of Prague has to offer. Why not combine it with my work? I decided to do just that. I searched for and found a great space in a historic building dating from 15th century, on Prokopská Street, just a couple hundred meters from Malostranské náměstí, the square in the heart of Malá strana. The office is also very close to Charles Bridge and Kampa Island. I knew this was the right place!” he says.

“The center offers 20 work stations with free wired and wireless Internet connection, two conference rooms, with a capacity of up to 6 and 16 people, respectively and equipped with projection and sound system capabilities. We also have a gallery-style lounge with a breathtaking view of Prague Castle, a kitchen with refreshments, bathroom with shower, and much more,” adds Načeradský.

But it's not only about the location and facility. Coworking is a lot about community too. Desk Room attracts professionals from a wide range businesses, from programmers and web and graphic designers via marketers, journalists, lawyers and financial and tax advisers to coaches, translators, interpreters and copywriters.

Načeradský explains that the aim of coworking is to create a good mix of personalities and professionals, get them interacting and support their mutual cooperation. “It’s a long but rewarding process but it’s paying off. We do our best to spread the news about coworking by word of mouth, networking, referrals, free open house events called Jelly! and all kinds of other events. I’m very excited about all the support, valuable feedback, great ideas I get from all the community members. I’m also grateful for their willingness to help to start up this new venture. I really appreciate it!”

Desk Room is also a member of Prague and worldwide coworking visa program, where members of other coworking centers not only in Prague but anywhere in the world, who are also associated in the visa program, can come and work at the center.

Desk Room invites anybody who is interested in coworking and would like to meet the community members and try out a coworking center to come and try it for free.
